Lenten Series 2021 – “I AM”
In Gospels, Jesus speaks about himself multiple times. Especially in John’s Gospel, he used a very particular phrase to identify himself, which is two words, “I AM,” or “ἐγώ εἰμι (ego eimi)” in Greek. Especially in John’s Gospel, he used this 7 to 8 times, using a variety of words to describe himself.
I AM. They are simple words in our world, but not quite in Jesus’ time. It was a holy and reverent phrase, which was used to refer to God of Israel, as in Exodus, where God identified God’s own self to Moses in saying, “I am who I am [meaning, I am the one who exists myself].” When Jesus used this phrase for himself, therefore, it should be surprising to many, if not frightening.
And now the words tell us a lot about Jesus. Many churches remember who Jesus is with those words, and Wesley also has a stained glass in the Sanctuary (which many families miss at this moment) that depicts the identity of Jesus as who “I AM.” This Lent, Wesley invites you to a journey to study who Jesus is. Let us see what he spoke about himself. And let us discover who we say he is. Come and join us any or every week. Many Lenten blessings to you and all around you.
