UWF Book Club

Everyone is invited to participate in the Wesley United Women in Faith Book Club! We are not limited to only the women! Do share with all members of Wesley and your friends. The Book Club meets every 6-8 weeks via Zoom on a Sunday at 4:00 pm. The inspirational books are from the UWF Reading Program Book List. Reading Program books are divided into five categories: Education for Mission, Leadership Development, Nurturing for Community, Social Action, and Spiritual Growth. Books are available for people of all ages and reading levels. Books that are suitable for children or youth are listed among the five categories. Many titles are available in the Fairfax County Public Library.

Common Grounds Class

The class meets after the Sunday service. The class is hybrid, meaning you can meet in the library or zoom in. The class signs on/gathers at 11:05 or whenever after that you can make it. There is conversation for 15 minutes, and the discussion starts at 11:20. We end promptly at noon. Although the class is in the format of a book discussion group, there is no requirement to purchase/read the book. Just drop in for the discussion of a topic of interest. The book is available in Fairfax County Public Library.

The Common Grounds Adult Sunday School class is now reading The Book of Joy: Lasting Happiness in a Changing World by Nobel Peace Prize Laureates His Holiness the Dalai Lama and Archbishop Desmond Tutu. Book sections, divided into short chapters are titled: The Nature of True Joy, The Obstacles to Joy, The Eight Pillars of Joy.

Thursday Morning Breakfast

Wesley UMC’s Men meet to enjoy a low-key breakfast every Thursday Morning at 8AM at the Merrifield Silver Diner. While this breakfast is “billed” as a Men’s breakfast, all are welcomed to join in. We meet for about an hour, or as long as our “hot air” can last! This has been a Thursday morning staple for more than 25 years (although we have moved around to different area restaurants over time)!

The idea was originally thought of by one of our former ministers, Jim Ward, who thought it would be a good idea to have a low-key, out-of-church, experience to discuss church and other items in our lives without ministerial guidance. Today, we enjoy discussing with everyone about ongoing subjects in our lives – Wesley, family, medical issues, sports, mostly wherever our discussion takes us, (although we do strive to avoid political discussions). Our typical attendance is between 4 and 9 people, but we’re always glad to add another table or two! Come out and join us! Even if you don’t want a full breakfast, feel free to stop by and have some coffee or tea!
